These easy patriotic pretzel rods are a quick, festive, and crowd-pleasing treat perfect for the 4th of July or any celebration. They combine crunchy pretzels dipped in smooth white chocolate and decorated with red and blue sugar crystals.

  • 20–25 pretzel rods, sturdy and lightly salted
  • 12 ounces white chocolate melts or chips (preferably Ghirardelli)
  • 1/2 cup red colored sugar crystals (Wilton brand recommended)
  • 1/2 cup blue colored sugar crystals (Wilton brand recommended)
  • Optional: small star-shaped nonpareils or edible glitter
  • Wax paper or parchment paper for drying
  • Optional: 1 teaspoon coconut oil or shortening for smoother chocolate

Instructions

  1. Melt the white chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl on medium power for 30 seconds, stir, then continue melting in 15-second intervals, stirring each time until smooth (about 2 minutes total). Optionally stir in 1 teaspoon coconut oil for glossiness.
  2. Line a baking sheet with wax or parchment paper and prepare shallow bowls with red and blue sugar crystals.
  3. Hold a pretzel rod by one end and dip about two-thirds into the melted white chocolate, letting excess drip back into the bowl.
  4. Immediately sprinkle red sugar crystals on the top third, blue sugar crystals on the middle third, and leave the bottom third plain for a patriotic stripe effect.
  5. Place dipped pretzels flat on the prepared baking sheet. Optionally rest the plain end on the edge of the bowl to avoid contact with the surface.
  6. Allow pretzels to set at room temperature for 30-45 minutes, or refrigerate for 15-20 minutes if in a hurry (watch for condensation).
  7. Once firm, transfer pretzel rods to a serving platter or airtight container.

Notes

Use room temperature pretzels to avoid chocolate cracking. Work quickly when sprinkling to ensure toppings stick well. Avoid moisture to prevent chocolate seizing. Store in a cool, dry place for up to 5 days. Rewarm chocolate gently if it thickens during dipping.
